Ian Gregory has put together some audio learning materials at http://www.ians-net.co.uk/. Go there for new additions and current versions.
One of his articles is available here, about Balanced and Unbalanced Audio.
He also wrote a Windows program called "Simple Feedback Trainer" which is designed to simulate the process of 'ringing out' a sound system and train the user to recognise frequencies by ear.
Click here for SFT 2.0 (Current as of Feb, 2004), or click here to go to his website to see if there is a more current version.
