IATSE Local 122 Winter Workshop

We are currently collecting information and materials from the 2007 Winter Workshop. When they are available, all information and downloadable materials that are available will be found in the Class Archives section of this website.

We need volunteers to help with the Winter Workshop. We will need volunteers to help on Dec 17, 18, 19, & 20. You can volunteer for any time that you are available. Volunteers will gain hours towards their pre-apprentice hours. Click here to sign-up to help out.

*NOTE: Advanced sign-up is NOT required to attend the workshop. Classes are opened to anyone who is registered to work with IATSE Local 122. There will be sign-in sheets at the workshop, and additional sign-in sheets for each class. Make sure you sign-in on site and in the classes so that we have record of your attendance.

December 18 & 19 at the San Diego Convention Center will have 3 classrooms going all day long! There will be plenty of "hands-on" training and background lectures. This will be a great workshop with beginning and intermediate classes in Video, Audio, Electrics, and Computers. There will also be orientation classes on working in the Convention Center and being a steward. Please plan to attend both of these days at the convention center.

This class is required for all Pre-Apprentice and Apprentice Employees to attend. All employees attending this workshop are encouraged to attend this class.

 

Information will be covered about working in the San Diego Convention Center, union jurisdiction, useful information about general job issues, a Question and Answer session about IATSE Local 122, and information specific to this workshop.

Electrics Basics Part 1

Video Engineering Basic

Audio Basics

 

This class is available for anyone to attend.

 

This will cover all the basics while working on an electrics crew. Test information will be covered during this class. This is part 1 of a two part class.

This is a basics class for Video Engineering and is open for everyone to attend.

 

This class will cover basic switching and using the smaller switchers we see on a regular basis. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend this class.

This is a basics class covering the important aspects of audio and theory. This class is open for anyone to attend.

 

Test information will be covered during this class. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

Basic Electric Part 2

Video Engineering Intermediate

Mixing in AV Breakout Rooms

 

This class is available for anyone to attend.

 

This will cover all the basics while working on an electrics crew. Test information will be covered during this class. This is part 2 of a two part class.

This class is an advanced class and is open to video specialist only.

 

This class is centered around using larger video switchers, like those generally used in large general sessions.

This is a basics class covering setup and using audio systems. This class is open to everyone.

 

The basis of this class will be setting up and using complete audio systems in AV breakout rooms, with an emphasis on mixer routing and EQ. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

A2 - Wireless Systems

 

This is a basics class for Video in AV Breakout rooms. This class is open to everyone.

 

This class will cover complete information about using video and AV Breakout rooms. Test Information will be covered during this class. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

Open video lab.

 

This room will be open to anyone wanting more hands-on experience with video equipment. There will be several instructors available for 1-on-1 instruction and information.

This class is an advanced class and is open to audio specialist only.

 

This class is devoted only to using wireless systems and frequency coordination. This will be centered around designing and organizing large wireless systems as an A2 or for large wireless meeting room systems.

 

 

 

 

NEW Class! Building A General Session

Hand's-on experience building an actual general session. We will be building a general session for the Labor Counsel Luncheon happening on Dec 20. This will be a complete class with full explanations, understanding why we do things, what is important and what isn’t, and all questions will be answered. Please plan to attend the great hand’s-on opportunity.

Lighting Plots

Computer Basics

Stewarding

 

This class is available for anyone to attend.

 

This will cover all the information that you need to know about reading and hanging light plots on the job site. There will be a number of plots available to look over and interpret, including plots for the first SD Opera next season. Anyone who regularly works on electric crews is strongly encouraged to attend this class. Test information will be covered.

This is a basics class for using computers in  breakout rooms. This class is open to everyone, however it is expected that you already have basic computer knowledge.

 

This class will cover complete information operating computers for breakout rooms, including transferring files, getting around the computer, interfacing computers to video and audio systems, and opening power point files. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

This class is open to everyone and will cover a number of points about being a steward for IATSE Local 122.

This class will be taught by multiple instructors who work as stewards in a variety of circumstances. This class is designed for new stewards and for anyone who works on large shows and needs to understand what their steward is doing for them.

This class is available for anyone to attend.

 

This class covers complete information on Power Distribution Systems. You will learn theory and practical information that everyone who works in this business needs to know. All electrical specialists should attend this class.

This class is open to everyone, however, it is required that you are comfortable using computers, and experienced with file transfers and interfacing computers to video systems. If you are found to not have these skills, you will be replaced by someone who is ready.

 

This class will cover using power point and basic editing. How to insert files, edit titles, re-arrange slides, etc.. This class is designed for people who will likely provide help to presenters during development.

This is a basics class covering the important aspects of audio and theory. This class is a repeat of the class on Dec 18, but with a different instructor. This class is open for anyone to attend.

 

Test information will be covered during this class. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

AV Electrics

Networking / Meeting Room

A2 - Intercom Systems

 

This class is available for anyone to attend.

 

This class will cover complete information on Electrical and lighting systems for AV Breakout rooms and small general sessions. You will learn about using smaller light board and dimmer systems, along with house light systems and interfacing. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

This class is open to everyone, however, it is required that you are comfortable using computers, and experienced with file transfers and interfacing computers to video systems. If you are found to not have these skills, you will be replaced by someone who is ready.

 

This class will cover setup and interfacing meeting room and speaker ready room computers on a networks. Anyone interested in working on A/V calls should attend.

This class is an advanced class and is open to audio specialist only, and is tailored to the General Session A2.

 

This class will cover a significant amount of information about building and designing intercom systems. RTS and Clear Com systems will be the primary focus, and will focus on specific belt-pack designs and large, multi-channel systems including wireless com systems.

This room will be open to anyone wanting more hands-on experience with electrical equipment. There will be several instructors available for 1-on-1 instruction and information.

This class is an advanced class and is open to video specialist only.

 

This class is centered around using large video projectors and working in general sessions.

Open audio lab.

 

This room will be open to anyone wanting more hands-on experience with audio equipment. There will be several instructors available for 1-on-1 instruction and information.

 

 

 

 

December 20 will be a multi-class day at the San Diego Sports Arena. The morning will have an all-inclusive Ground Rigging event with plenty of information for every employee. Make sure you plan to be at this event! Following the ground rigging class, there will be high steel rigging and training on the duties of the Master Electrician at the Sports Arena, including tying in power, along with hands-on spot light training. In the Evening, riggers will prepare for ETCP certification with a study group led by Brendan Berg.

Ground Rigging

 

This class is REQUIRED for all Pre-Apprentice and Apprentice Employees.

 

This class will cover everything you need to know as a ground rigger, including understanding symbols, building a variety of bridals, communication, and what the up rigger is doing. Test information will be covered in this class. Everyone is expected to know this information, no matter what your specialty is.

High Steel Rigging

The Master Electrician and Tying in Power

Spot Light (6 instructional lights)

 

This is an advanced class and only open to rigging specialists. Invitation and instructor approval are required.

 

This class will cover “up” rigging at the San Diego Sports Arena and will include both the lower and high steel in the building.

This is a double class, covering the duties of the master electrician and spot light operation in the Sports Arena.

 

The Master Electrician class will cover tying in power, operation of the house lights and mirror ball, and other duties of that position at the Sports Arena.

 

Spot Light operation will be hands-on experience with instructors at 6 different perches. You will cover operating a follow spot for sports arena shows and headset conversation. This is a great class for anyone who works at the San Diego Sports Arena.

ETCP Study Session (Sports Arena Lounge)

 

This class is only open to Rigging Specialists who are currently preparing to take the ETCP Rigging Exams.

 

This is a small study group designed specifically for those preparing for the ETCP rigging certifications. This class will be led by Brendan Berg and will help you prepare for what is expected of you when you take the exam.
