Electrics 1: System Familiarization

This hands-on course is designed to introduce technicians to essential electrics systems, equipment setup, and safety practices used in live event production. Whether you’re new to lighting or looking to refine your skills, this training will ensure you’re confident working with modern stage lighting systems.
What You’ll Learn:
- Electrics System Components – Understand relays, circuit breakers, gateways, power panels, and house lighting plots.
- Electrical Load Calculations – Learn how to determine power requirements using W=VA.
- Equipment & Inventory Management – Locate and organize cables, accessories, lights, and tools efficiently.
- Control Systems & Paradigm – Operate presets, manage relays, and differentiate between dimmers, addresses, and channels.
- Lighting Fixtures & Identification – Work with industry-standard instruments, including Source 4 LED ERS, ETC Desire D60, SGM G-Spot Turbo, and more.
- Paperwork & Documentation – Read and interpret light plots, instrument schedules, and channel hookups.
- Rigging & Instrument Handling – Learn the proper techniques for hanging, striking, and focusing lighting instruments.
- Follow Spot Operation – Adjust colors, use a Telrad, and operate dowsers effectively.
- Cable & Tool Management – Properly coil cables and ensure your tool kit is equipped with essentials like a multi-tool and 8” adjustable wrench.
Who Should Take This Course?
This class is ideal for aspiring lighting technicians, stagehands, and event production professionals who want to build a strong foundation in electrics and lighting.

- The learner must have worked a call from the referral hall, worked under a collective bargaining agreement, or be a current member of IATSE Local 122.
- This is an in person class.
