Fly Rail 10 : Intro to Fly Rail and Brick Loading

Counterweight fly systems are essential for materials handling in theaters, enabling the movement of curtains, scenic elements, lighting, and all other elements above the stage. This course provides an in-depth introduction to the fundamental components and safe operation of a counterweight fly rail system. Participants will learn to identify and understand the various parts of the system, including arbors, batons, counterweights, and ropes. The class emphasizes safety protocols for working in and around the fly rail, as well as the proper techniques for loading and unloading counterweights. By the end of the course, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a fly rail system effectively and safely, ensuring smooth and secure handling of all overhead stage elements.

This is an in person class offered at the California Center for the Arts Escondido (CCAE) located at 340 N Escondido Blvd, Escondido CA 92025 in the Concert Hall. Attendees can park here and enter the marked Stage Door here. There will be a one hour walk away lunch at 1pm.


  • The learner must have worked a call from the referral hall, worked under a collective bargaining agreement, or be a current member of IATSE Local 122.
  • This is an in person class. This class has limited attendance and all attendees must have a reservation; therefore, it will be treated like a job call.
